Athena Elementary students and their families enjoyed a hands-on science night in November. The Whitman Science Night was put on by Whitman College in Walla Walla through faculty and student volunteers, as well as community and school volunteers and community partners.
Partners at the Athena event included the Audubon Society, U.S. Forest Service and the Farm to School program.
Activities students engaged in were:
discovering and making fossils
making ice cream
making slime
learning about and petting Stevie the corn snake
designing catapults
learning about water and erosion
soil and seeds
radial chromatography
planets
Principal Kerri Coffman said it was a great night of exploration and learning for students. Coffman showed bravery by petting Stevie the snake. “I have a fear of snakes but was brave and pet Stevie. When it came to taking a picture...well a picture tells a thousand words,” Coffman said.
According to Whitman College information, science night is “a cherished program that sparks curiosity, fosters a love for discovery, and makes science accessible to children and their families.”
Thank you, Whitman College, for a great event!
