1959 McEwen Football Team

  • the 1959 McEwen football team was the first McEwen team to go to the state playoffs

  • during this year, only the league champions advanced to state

  • thirty boys were on the team, including fifteen returning letterman

  • the team averaged almost 30 points, while giving up an average 12 points per game

  • they were champions of District 7B with an undefeated league record

  • in the state quarterfinals, the Scotties defeated the strong, undefeated Wallowa Tigers 25-6

  • in the semi-finals, McEwen lost to the eventual state champions, St. Mary's of Medford

  • two players from the team, Larry Whitney and Dave Hesp were chosen for the Shrine All-Star Team with Harry Brown as an alternate

  • on additional story, not on any stat sheets but equally important is a tragic one

    • the team suffered a major setback when sophomore Richard McCracken was accidentally killed in a shooting accident early in the season

    • the season was dedicated to his memory and until that point it was the best season in history
