  • graduated from McEwen High School in 1958

    • co-salutatorian of his graduating class

  • participated in football, basketball and baseball

  • was on the speech team and won the district competition in extemporaneous talks

  • participated in band for four years

  • went to science and mathematics competitions

  • earned a BS with distinction in mathematics from Stanford University

  • earned both his Masters degree in 1964 and Ph.D in 1965 in mathematics from the University of Oregon

  • spent one year on the faculty of Stanford University

  • spent two years on the faculty of Carneige Mellon University

  • spent forty years on the faculty of the University of Michigan

  • during his tenure at Michigan, he held visiting positions at Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rutgers University

  • he has authored a textbook on probability, a research monograph on sequential analysis and written over 100 research articles

  • his research has been the target of many grants from the National Science Foundation

  • he was honored on his 65th birthday with a conference by the National Science Foundation
